"You have access control
to identify who goes in, but do you have an EXIT STRATEGY to control what comes
out?"
WalletGard Access Control
We sell, install and service the finest Access Control Systems available.
Companies world-wide already use RFID for employee access control systems.
Because it's so common, most employees don't think twice when they're given a
key card or FOB to control building access. In fact, people feel safer when
working in a secure facility.
Long range readers can read a key card and unlock a door from 30 feet away.
This could be beneficial in a warehouse for example. For office access control,
a reduced range reader prevents a person from unlocking a door by simply walking
nearby, requiring the key card to be placed within a few inches of the reader.
The biggest challenge is that data stored on current RFID tags can be easily
compromised. Even with new standards, encryption that comes with RFID tags or
control cards is not considered strong enough for most purposes.
Access control installations are on the rise. Everyone – corporate officers
and employees feel much safer knowing that only approved persons can enter
particular areas.
When implementing access control systems, consider the ethics of personal
privacy and what your employees may think, or assume, about being tracked -
which brings us to the next point.
“What information, other than an employee ID number, is really on the key
card?”
Most company officials don’t know! Most employees don’t know! It is a well
know fact that technical people, like the ones who installed your current Access
Control system, can and probably did place additional information on YOUR card
and/or your EMPLOYEE’S card. This information is transparent to you, since it is
transmitted on a radio wave, and could include your birth date, drivers license
number and social security number to name a few. Additionally, critical company
data could be walking out the door on a key FOB or key card with or without the
employee’s knowledge. Because key cards are available in a variety of memory
sizes, entire databases could be leaving your office, including customer data
and product costs.
